have been perusing the data published by the Planning Commission in its document for the twelfth plan. The table relating to growth in Agriculture and related sectors makes an interesting reading. Table 12.1 of the document shows that the contribution of the Agriculture and allied sectors, as a percentage of the total GDP in the ninth plan was 24% and in the 11th plan it has come down to 15.2% (estimated). What this shows is an utter neglect of the sector. yet one does not hear of any positive steps being proposed to give this sector a boost.
Saw a report in TOI of August 19th that the CAG has pointed out that there is a large variance in Govt. data that is being presented. This fact should be self evident to all those who have worked in the Govt. We have never been able to present figures which can stand any deep scrutiny. The data presented is so voluminous that it defies analysis. Further the data is prepared and compiled by people who are really not trained for this nor have, perhaps, the capabilities.
